In Memory of Mr Barrie M. Clarke
It is with profound sadness that The Old School announces the passing of our much-loved friend, colleague, and teacher, Mr Barrie M. Clarke. Barrie was a cornerstone of our community, a gentle presence whose impact will resonate for generations.
Joining us in 2010 as our Mathematics and Science teacher, Barrie quickly became far more than an instructor. He was a passionate advocate for the joy of learning, believing firmly that education should be an experience to be lived, not just a curriculum to be taught. His classroom was a place of warmth, curiosity, and encouragement, where every student felt seen and capable.
Beyond the classroom, Barrie, together with his wife Dorothy, wove the fabric of our school’s family spirit. They became legendary for the magical Christmas dinners they orchestrated each year. These events were a true labour of love, where students and staff worked side-by-side preparing, serving, and celebrating, forging traditions that created some of our fondest collective memories.
In recent years, Barrie’s commitment to experiential learning and community shone through his generous hosting of our beginning-of-term residentials at his campsite. There, amidst challenges and campfires, staff and students built confidence, resilience, and the kind of authentic friendships that define The Old School ethos.
Barrie Clarke was a teacher in the truest sense—a guide, a mentor, and a friend. He will be deeply missed by every student who had the privilege of learning from him, every colleague who valued his wisdom and camaraderie, and by the entire school family he helped to build. His legacy is not merely in lessons taught, but in lives touched, spirits lifted, and a community strengthened by his unwavering kindness and belief in us all. We extend our deepest condolences to Dorothy and his family.
